pharmacy

Pharmacy is often referred to as the most underutilised healthcare profession yet the most accessible for both patients and the public.

Pharmacists and their teams see people who are ill but also those who are well, this means they are well placed to support the health and wellbeing of their population. Pharmacy owners, governments, funders and industry must leverage this to gain better value for money and improved outcomes.

The four domains of pharmacy practise are:

  • Pharmaceutical care - optimising the use and value of medicines to improve patient outcomes
  • Wellbeing - healthy lifestyle interventions to increase awareness, prevent illhealth and protect from disease
  • Supported self care - self treatment of common ailments plus support and advice to take ownership of an individual's health and wellbeing
  • Independent living - supporting an increasing and ageing population out-of-hospital and in their own homes

Supporting patients to get the most out of their medicines whether purchased for common ailments or prescribed for acute illness and long-term conditions is a core role, but these interactions are also opportunities to add further value through healthy lifestyle interventions on smoking, healthy diet and weight, physical activity, alcohol consumption, sexual health, vaccination services and more. Initiatives such as the Healthy Living Pharmacy concept have clearly demonstrated the benefits of this organisational development model for the public, funders, pharmacy owners and pharmacy teams (see documents to download below).

As the health and public health landscape changes, pharmacy owners, pharmacists and their teams across the world must adapt and embrace the opportunities this creates. This requires an understanding the needs of their population, development of their people and their premises, and focusing their activity on outcomes that address the priorities by engaging and working with other providers - these are the enablers of pharmacy's future.

MH Associates can help pharmacists, pharmacy owners, pharmacy bodies and governments understand the WHY, the HOW and the WHAT of their sustainable future including improving the quality of pharmaceutical care and implementing the Healthy Living Pharmacy concept.
